User research about a prospective intranet for the RAF Air Cadets
The RAF Air Cadets offer a range of activities, training and education to young people as part of their personal and professional development. This work is supported by around 10,000 adult volunteers across the UK.
Project overview
The RAF Air Cadets currently have a range of different Sharepoint sites across the organisation that vary in terms of structure and usability.
Project goals
The main goals for the project were:
- To understand the needs of RAF Air Cadets volunteers that an intranet could meet
- To inform the information design of an intranet landing page
- To inform a roadmap for the development of an intranet
Project team
To deliver the necessary work, the Lagom project team consisted of a dedicated User Researcher, Content Strategist, and Delivery Manager.
What we did
- Identified an initial list of top tasks
- Analysed 214 responses to a top tasks survey
- Conducted 5 follow up user interviews
We developed an initial list of top tasks for a prospective RAF Air Cadets intranet. This list included tasks such as ‘book activity centres’ and ‘find national events’. Each task was also assigned to a group, for example ‘announcements’ or ‘training’.
The top tasks survey revealed a number of tasks that are important to RAF Air Cadets adult volunteers. It also revealed which task groups are most important to adult volunteers.
The follow up interviews enabled us to further understand the needs of RAF Air Cadets adult volunteers that could be met by a prospective intranet.
These activities allowed us to develop a clearer sense of which tasks and resources will be important for a prospective intranet, and why these tasks and resources are important to adult volunteers.
We presented our findings to the RAF Air Cadets team alongside survey data and analysis, user interview transcripts, and the list of validated top tasks.
Project outcomes
The project’s outputs allowed us to develop a set of supplementary recommendations on how to proceed with an intranet for RAF Air Cadets adult volunteers.
The RAF Air Cadets team are now using these recommendations to progress their intranet.
